About Us

I hope this website gives you a glimpse into the wonderful life in St. Columba’s where we strive to help our pupils become the best that they can be. We aim to help our pupils reach their full potential academically through the learning experiences provided by our excellent teaching staff and highly-experienced classroom assistants. We also strive for the holistic development of our children by providing a wide range of enriching experiences. We have an extensive After-Schools Programme which provides opportunities for children to develop their sporting, artistic, dramatic, musical and technological skills. Enjoy the journey!

St Columba’s Primary School, Straw is a friendly rural, welcoming school located approximately 1 mile from Draperstown in the village of Straw.

The first school in Straw was a hedge school in 1834. In 1957 the school moved to a school building which was in operation until 20 September 2012.  On this day the children and staff relocated to their new, modern, state-of-the-art school building which is positioned in the field adjacent to the old school.

The staff at St Columba’s is committed to providing:

  • A happy, caring and supportive environment
  • Children have the opportunity to develop their fullest potential
  • An atmosphere which proudly maintains a Catholic ethos
  • To ensure that all learners benefit from a rich, broad, balanced curriculum
  • To nurture the intellectual, creative, moral, spiritual and physical development of all children
  • To promote equality of opportunity for all. To value diversity and encourage responsibility, self-confidence and raise self-esteem in all aspects of school life.
